Sitrep (40K); Dresden Clay Pigeon Shoot round 2

Round 2 vs Arne Klemens

Mission;
Capture the objectives, (six pieces of terrain, 1 in each 2’x2’ section of the table) is nominated as an objective. At the end of the game which ever player has the most objectives is the winner.

Secret mission: got a date
One unit of boyz must survive the game to complete the secret mission

Deployment; Pitched battle

Crisis teams move into position

Special rules;
Under control: A scoring unit must have the majority of its models in the terrain objective to capture it. Once capture the scoring unit can leave the terrain and still count it under control until an enemy scoring unit moves into the terrain.

The enemy;
Shas’o R’myr
HQ crisis suit
1 unit of three broadside
2 units of crisis suits
2 units of six fire warriors
1 unit of six path finders
1 Hammer Head with ion cannon
1 Devil Fish
1 Piranha
2 units of fiftheen kroot
1 unit of 3 pigeons

The game;
Tau won deployment roll and open to go first. The kroot, one squad of fire warriors and a devilfish went in reserve. One unit of fire warriors occupied a scoring building while the pathfinders with pigeons went on its roof. The Crisis teams and Broadsides deployed in the centre with the Hammerhead going on the other flank.
In reply the Orks opted for refused flank facing the building with the pathfinders. De I’s opted to deploy and scout moved towards the pathfinders to give them something to think about.

The Ork line up

The tau responded with the crisis teams, who opened up on the koptas killing one and wounding the other. The pathfinders lit up skullhamma which then exploded after a hit from the broadsides. The Hammer head blew-up a killa kan. The surviving deff kopta attacked the pathfinders. Lungbusta went full ahead with the rest of the army chasing after it except the grots, which captured an objective, and the killa kans which tried to hid behind terrain to avoid the Hammerhead. Fraggit’s mob captured and objective on the way to the tau battle line.

In reply a unit of kroot arrived and quickly captured a nearby objective and starting to threaten the grots. The Tau opened fire the mobs took fire but it was not as bad as it could have been.

Naggog’s mob Waaaghed and swept into combat with the crisis suits. Crushinator got in an assault on a piranha that was trying to sneak in for a rear shot on Lungbusta. The rest of the Orks pushed forward. Naggog’s mob pinned the suits while the Crushinator destroyed the piranha. The Tau retaliated with the Hammerhead immobilizing Crushinator and the remaining Tau opening fire on the oncoming hordes. Combat saw Naggog’s mob still pinned with the suits. The Deff kopta and pathfinders continued to trade insults.

Lord Snips moved to contest an objective near the table edge in case more Kroot showed up. Maggot’s mob opened fire on the hammer head with no effect. Then the war boss, Big Mek, Nobz and Fraggit’s mob hit the crisis suits. Shas’o R’myr pulled his flechette discharge wounding the nobs, the big mek and half a dozen boyz*. To counter Bork ripped his head off with the rest of the suits going down under a green wave. The Kopta vs pathfinder clash was still ongoing.

Shas'O R'myr last stand

With the lose of Shas’o R’myr the Tau when even more defensive. A second wave of kroot arrived and found Lord Snips waiting on the objective. Everything that could opened fire on Fraggits mob killing a dozen or so boyz. The on positive note was the deff kopta finally was destroyed by the pathfinders. On a roll the Waaagh continued. The warboss peeled off to chase down a nearby squad of Fire warriors. The big mek mounted Lungbusta and tried to ram a newly arrived devilfish. The Nobz went after the pathfinders and pigeons. Fraggit’s mob went after the Broadsides while Maggit’s mob went after the Hammerhead. The green tide hit again with the fire warriors getting massacred by the Warboss, Fraggit’s mob destroyed the Broadsides while Maggot’s mob got the Hammerhead. As a bonus the Nobz flamed the pathfinders causing them to flee.
Playing on, the fleeing pathfinders/pigeons destroyed the nobz while the kroot managed to immobile Lord Snips with a rear shot.
Maggit’s mob captured another objective but the Warboss was not a scoring unit so the Tau held on to theirs. The results was orks with three objectives compared to the Tau’ s one.

The result; Draw 13- 7 to the orks
Secret mission= completed
Enemy pigeons killed = 3
Friendly pigeons alive=1

* On a side note german flechette discharge seem to work different to what I am use to. The good is they only hit enemy models in contact with the model. Since the IC had the flechette dischargers and he was in a retinue, that meant any model in contact with the squad could be hit not the 25+ boyz in Fraggit’s mob who could not base contact. The bad, models were rolled separately ie special weapons guys and boss could be picked out.

Slightly off topic Nurgle bikers looked pretty cool

I don't they should be allowed to turbo boost though, since they are on snails ;)

Sitrep (40K): the Dresden clay pigeon shot pt1

Frist blood in Dresden. The Dresdner Tontaubenschießen (Dresden clay pigeon shoot) was the tournament I was most curious about Germany since it is in the local neighborhood. It is 2 days, comp heavy, with a host of special rules. I have mixed feelings about the comp, I like the concept but I have yet to see it done well. I am less keen on special rules, especial in German since usually players forget them altogether or worse one guy remembers while the other forgets resulting players playing different games. An add concern was that there were bonus missions would not be declared until at the start of each round, that should make for a good test for my german.

Event special rules;

The clay pigeon;
The clay pigeon is servitor skull-like IC armed with a rending flame thrower. Each player received one just for entering ,also players from previous events could use their old Clay pigeons to formed a squad. Surviving or dead pigeons were worth +1 Vps.

Secret mission:
Each round has a secret mission worth +2 points

Overall break down of points was;
Battle, 85 pts
Clay pigeon, 5 pts
Bonus mission, 10pts

Day one got off to a good start with me getting off at the wrong stop and then turning left when I should have gone right. A phone call later and I arrived at the venue and my frist 40K tournament to be played in a beer tent. The BBQ outside was a bonus.

Another plus was that Klemens and Micheal, the organizers, had rather nicely translated the special missions into english for me, thanks guys.

For the Dresden clay pigeon shoot the Green tide consisted of

Warboss Bork son of Gork
Big Mek Zork son of Mork
Bork’s Boyz, 3 nobz in Skullhamma (battle wagon)
Lord Snips (deff dread)
Crushinator (deff dread)
Runt botz (3 kill kans)
Maggit’s mob (30 boyz)
Fraggit’s mob (30 boyz)
Naggog’s mob (20 boyz) riding Lungbusta (battlewagon)
De I’s (2 dekk koptas)
Round 1 vs Steffan playing nids

Mission;Breakthrough
Each separate unit in the enemy deployment zone at the end of the game scores a VP whoever has the most VPs is the winner.

Secret mission: 'ead hunter
Kill the most valuable enemy HQ and get it into contact with the warboss to complete the secret mission

Deployment; Pitched battle

Special rules; Get there frist.
Only scouts and infiltrators can be deployed. And they must be deployed in their deployment zone. Everything else moves in turn one.

The enemy; Tyranids
2 Warrior Primes
2 broods of three hive guard
1 Doom of Malanti
2 Carnifex
1 brood of thirty garyoles
1 brood of fiftheen gaunts
2 broods of one carnifexs
1 unit of four pigeons
Battling Tyranids on an infested world. Not a bad way to start a tournament

The game;
Four pigeons meant Stefan had played in the event at least four times. Also he had one game re-roll bonus for his teddy bear because it was fluffy (get it).

Hive mind opted to deploy its primes with the carnifex brood in the centre with the Malanti behind them. One flank was covered by another carnifex back up with a gaunt brood and hive guard. The other had gargoyles, carnifex and hive guard. In reply the Orcs deployed the wagons, deff dreads and a big mob against the gargoyles wing with the rest deployed against the opposite wing with De I’s opting to out flank. The basic plan was to attack enchelon, breakthrough and outflank.

nice carnifex

Turn one saw the nids re-adjusting their lines while the Orcs moved full speed to engage. Turn two saw the teddy bear go from fluffy to cheesy when was used to destroy Lungbusta. Skullhamma was destroyed with the next shot and to put salt in the wound Bork and his retinue were pinned. On the other flank the gaunts and carnifex started to inflicted heavy casualties on one of the big mobs while one of the killa kans blew-up after taking a hit from the hive guard. The loss of both wagons meant the boyz were going to have to do it the old fashion way.

Naggog’s mob sprinted towards the carnifex and hive guard. Fraggit’s mob opted to give covering fire and shot up a couple of trees. Maggit’s mob opted for a tactical withdraw to the woods. Elsewhere, the deff dreads pushed forward. Naggog’s mob opted to Waaagh to get into combat with the carnifex and hive guard more to limit their shooting than anything else. Combat saw Naggog’s mob getting to upper hand in combat causing a couple of wounds and pinning to two tyranids shooting units in combat.

Killa Kans up fire on the approaching swarm
(they claim twenty kills over the game including fifteen enemy models)

In reply the gargoyles swooped forwards after Fraggit’s mob. The warrior primes moved towards the Naggog’s mob while the carnifexs went after the dreads. On the other flank the hive guard, carnifex moved towards Maggit’s mob. Shooting saw the Lord Snips explode after taking a hit from a carnifex. On the bright side it meant the Carnifexs could not get a multiple assault in. The explosion killed a few boyz from Naggog’s mob meaning the warrior primes would have to take a terrain test to get into contact. Combat saw the gargoles hit and destroy Faggit’s mob. The Primes hit Naggog’s mob which held. While the Carnifex, hive guard, gaunt broods hit Maggits mob which also held.

The charge of the tyranids did not hit as hard as it should have. The gargoyles got a poor consolidation roll leaving them tightly packed for the nobz carrying flamerz. The deff koptas arrived in the enemy deployment zone. The pigeon broke cover and moved to engage the enemy pigeons. He flamed the squad killing three, then assaulted and killed the last one but was killed in the assault. Crushinator moved after the tyranid most valuable HQ. The killa kans and the grots mob move to support Maggit’s mob. Shooting saw the nobz light up the gargoles killing twenty with the rest fleeing of the board. Crushinator lived up to his name and killed the main warrior prime (to complete the secret mission I just had to get his head to the warboss 24” away). The killa kans and the grots attacked the tyranids fighting Maggots mob. The kans went after the gaunts while the grots went after the carnifex. The kans made short work of the gaunts while the grots did not make much of an impression on the carnifex but the Maggot’s power klaw got in a couple of good hits.

First game of the event and I lose my pigeon

The Hive mind was distracted by the grot assault. The remaining carnifex went after Lord Snips to get the secret mission back. Combat saw Crushinator and Naggog’s go down but not before finishing of the hive guard and the wounded carnifex. The trophy kill was claimed by the carnifexs making the ork secret mission harder to complete. On the other flank the carnifex and surviving hive guard were destroyed, with the kans, the boyz and the grots consolidating towards the tyranids deployment zone.

The Crushinator gets the Warrior Prime before being ripped apart by Carnifexs

The last turn was the Warboss, big mek and the nobs walk into the tyranids deployment. While of the other flank the boyz and the grots missed with the run rolls ending just short while the kill kans just made it in. Five scoring units in the enemy deployment zone was a solid win to the Green tide.

With the gargoyles toasted the warboss and his mob walked into the tyranid deployment zone

The result;
Solid win = 17-3 to the boyz,
Secret mission= incomplete,
Dead enemy pigeons =4
Surviving friendly pigeons =0

WiP (general): Dresden ww20

Hmm, an article about writing an article, that is just filler really, but I want to get back into the habit of posting once a week.

getting ready
Flames of war front;
The plastic T34 are nearly finished painting, decals are on weathering and fixing up is left to do.   Hot on the heels of the T34s is a platoon of Forged in Battles Marder III's and to give them something to fight over total battle miniatures Russian village has been under coated and is being worked on.

Unpainted Marder's taking aim

Total battle's russin village (not bad, not bad at all)

The Return of the House of Pain:
Dark Eldar are back on the work bench. Two Ravagers and a Raider are assembled ready to be primed. The crew, weapons, sails and point bits are going to be painted separately so they can be transported separately to minimise inevitable bits breakages. A retinue of Incubi has been assembled, primed and is being painted. For some reason I want to paint them the opposite to NMM (non metallic metal) just to see what can be done. The Incubi have been joined by Lelith's evil-er twin sister Lucy.

Shrine world is on the rocks.
I appear to have over estimated my ability with my new hot wire cutter :) .Walking around Dresden looking at the art shops with their polystyrene craved animals I thought a building, even the Freunkirche, would be easy it is just a collection of basic shapes after all. But the Cutter is just not making the grade or more likely I have not figured out how to use it yet. The first building for the shrine world took two attempts to get ready and is currently sitting covered in PVA glue and elastic bands a bit like a patient with critical injuries in hospital just missing a heart monitor.

SoB check out their new accomadation

To get some experience with the cutter before attempting more building I have started to some rocks (counts as difficult terrain) and hills for NWG. Ideally all the terrain at the event is new but realistically it will be only a few pieces. Another challenge is how much time, money and quality should be put into the terrain.

DE raiders moving through the hills
Upholstery hedgerows:
Also on the NWG terrain front I have started to look at some of the packaging upholstery. If it is cut to shape, then distressed (pulled a part a little) and painted or dyed to colour it might work as hedgerows. And if it works for 28mm scale then is should be workable for 15mm ie a potential normandy terrain set might be in the offing.

WiP (FOW):Achtung Panzer, plastic toy soldiers T34

Achtung Panzer, plastic soldier company T34 have arrived.

The FOW Russian (or possible Germans) got some new reinforcement in the form of ten T34 tanks from the plastic soldier company. With few parts and options to make both the 76 and 85 versions looks like a good investment. Being plastic opens up new modelling options. I am curious to see how forged in battle T34's rank up when they are released.

Paint wise these are going to end up as either a regular Russian T34/85 company or a more exotic German beute (looted) panzer company.

The Dresden campaign ww13

just in.

At ^%&* last base camp is set-up. Located on the third floor of a building (here after referred to as eagles nest) suspiciously close to Dresden's version of Temple-bar. One of the main obstacles was finding an apartment with a decent sized “office” room. The office can fit an 8'x6' table for proper FOW sized games or a small 2x2 apoc clashes.

Next step is to out fit the office. Terrain wise the Sisters are finally going to get an home.Dresden Frauenkirche church and a couple of other nearby buildings acting as inspiration for a shrine world for the sisters to defend.
Even though the act of making a games table and terrain guarantees no games will ever be played in the apartment it is still worth having a go to see what can be done with some of the german stuff. One of the interesting finds at the local hard ware stores was wall paper tables roughly 3'x2'. Four tables later and I have my 6'x4' battle board. As a bonus since each table is roughly 25% of a battle board I now know if I make a terrain set and it covers one of the small tables then it meets the GW criteria for 25% of the table to be covered in terrain.

With the Eagle's Nest established the rest of taskforce Dresden finally shipped. If you have ever wondered what seven companies of imperial guard, a dark eldar host, an eldar host, a cult army,an Astatertes army and a dozen FOW armies lookes like in boxes it is looks a little like this.

There is a small problem of trying to fit 32 boxes on to a couple of small shelves. But soon Dresden will be hearing the pitter patter of tiny little green feet.

Games wise a local club “hobby halle” are running an Apoc game this weekend featuring this guy.

Any club that stocks a fridge of beer beside power tools has to be worth a second visit. If they ever turned on the lights it would be an awesome venue. Also on the horizon is the Dresden 40K tournament (1day with no double units allowed) and the Czech GT (two days in Prague should be fun).

Rhino's are always popular shoe accessories for gargants.
